This week in The Loft: Author Kayelle Allen!

Joining me today in The Loft is author Kayelle Allen. Kayelle writes romance, Sci-Fi, and space opera with misbehaving robots, mythic heroes, role-playing immortal gamers, and warriors who purr. The author of multiple books, novellas, and short stories, Kayelle is the founder of Marketing for Romance Writers, a diverse organization of authors and other members of the literary community who share advice, promotional opportunities, and support. A U.S. Navy veteran, she is also a member of RomVets, a group of military and former military women who write romance. Kayelle claims she has been married so long she's tenured.

S: Welcome back Kayelle! It's always a pleasure to have you visit The Loft.

Are there any characteristics the lead characters in your latest book share?

K:  Kam and Brinn are both professional thieves who excel at working with children. In the Tarthian Empire, where this story unfolds, Thieves' Guild members working under a "contract" cannot be prosecuted. So to protect themselves, companies hire other thieves to devise systems that prevent theft. These two are the best at what they do, and have worked together in the past. One of their projects led to a romantic encounter, but neither pursued the relationship further.

S:  How did you meet your current partner? When did you know he was "the one?"

K:  I was on active duty in the Navy and stationed in Memphis, TN. He was also, and we took an orientation class together. One day we were walking in the same basic direction and struck up a conversation. Ended up having a soft drink and talked for hours. We spent every waking hour together we could. We were married less than six months later. What told me he was the one was that he treated me as an equal and always listened. He still does, 45 years later.

S:  Forty-five years together is a pretty amazing accomplishment.

What would you like to people know about you?

K:  I'm an introvert and highly intuitive. When I meet someone, I almost always spot an opportunity for rapport within a few seconds. I can also tell when people are being fake. I've missed that a few times with people who are good at having a front, but you know that old saying about being once-burned. I tend to come off as reserved, but I am silently figuring you out. Once I get to know you, I do my best to be the kind of friend you need.

S:  Relying on my intuition has saved my butt in more than one instance. It's a valuable skill.

What is the best/worst thing that has ever happened to you as a writer?

K:  I think of two amazing things right off the bat. First was when a reader who had to flee Hurricane Katrina's stormy wrath told me she took an autographed copy of my first book with her to protect it. I cried when I read that. Second, when I was doing a reading at Outlantacon, a gay geek Sci-Fi convention in Atlanta, Georgia, I held up the book "Wulf, Tales of the Chosen," my first MM book, and a young black man in the audience jumped to his feet--one of the heroes on the cover was also black. He said, "You wrote Wulf? Oh my God! I have to give you a hug!" and he ran up to where I was sitting and hugged me. It was his favorite book. We've stayed friends over the years, and honestly, I never get tired of telling that story. If you're interested in the con, you can find out more here. It's associated with Gaylaxicon. https://outlantacon.org

S:  Those are wonderful experiences!

What's the best advice you have ever been given?

K:  Focus on improving your strengths, and your weaknesses will decrease. Figure out what you're good at and do more of it. We all know what our weaknesses are. Focusing on those do not necessarily improve our strengths. Think of your energy as coins. If you have 10 coins of writing energy to spend every day, spending one coin on 10 different weak areas won't accomplish as much as spending 8 on improving one and 2 on a weakness. If you want to go far, prioritize amplifying what you already do right.

S:  That's great advice.

What inspired "Package Deal?"

K:   I'd been wanting to start a new series featuring the Thieves' Guild, an organization in my Tarthian Empire stories. It's been an important part of multiple books, including all the Antonello Brothers books. I saw an opportunity to get involved with a single dad anthology--"Package Deal"-- and immediately thought of Brinn. He'd been a major character in "A Stolen Heart," which is my permafree intro to the Antonello Brothers. I loved writing Brinn, because he had a wonderful sense of humor and adored working with children. So I grabbed this chance to tell a bit more of his story in "Hacking Planet Fun."

S:  Is there anything special you would like people to know about "Package Deal?"

K:  The anthology has multiple authors and genres, but all the stories have single fathers who find love. It was released on Father's Day, which I thought was a great time for a book about dads.

Here are the blurbs for "Package Deal" and "Hacking Planet Fun."

Hacking Planet Fun by Kayelle Allen

A twist on academy stories, the male-male science fiction romance Hacking Planet Fun focuses on the staff, and introduces a classroom of tiny precocious thieves.

Kam, Master of the Thieves' Guild Academy on the planet Kelthia, deals with a school full of fledgling thieves, con artists, and hackers, and doesn't need attitude from students, faculty, or staff. When he rejects a half-feline half-human prodigy for unmanageable behavior, his ex, Brinn, fosters the girl himself.

Brinn handles the unruly child well, and Kam grudgingly agrees she shows great potential as a future thief. Missing Brinn, Kam seeks to win him back. But when the child comes under suspicion as having hacked Planet Fun, an empire-renowned anti-gravity theme park, Kam must decide whether to trust his well-honed instincts, or his long-divided heart...

S:  Where can readers buy the anthology?

This week in The Loft: Author Serena James Chase!

Joining me today in The Loft is author Serena James Chase. Serena writes contemporary and fantasy romance. Her stories are sometimes angsty, always steamy. Serena loves to deliver those hard-earned happily-ever-afters. By day, she works in the non-profit world, but by night, she writes or spends time with her family. Serena is also a knitter, wanna-be foodie, and a proud life-long lover of hot cocoa and fuzzy blankets. She lives in New England with her husband and two sons.

S:  Good morning, Serena. Thanks for joining me today.

Why write romance?

SJC:  I always say I didn’t choose romance, romance chose me. And it’s true. Over the years, I’ve written stories in several genres and no matter how they started out, I always found my imagination locking on to building and crafting the love stories between the intended lead and sometimes not the intended lead, characters.

S:  I know exactly what you're talking about. To me falling love and romantic relationships are an important part of life. I can't seem to avoid writing about them.

Do you write in other genres?

SJC:  Yes, I do. Besides contemporary and fantasy romance, I also love writing about vampires and magic. I write urban fantasy, science fiction and speculative fiction under a different pen name, but fear not, even these stories have romance at the heart of them.

S:  What do you appreciate more in your romantic partners--Brains or brawn/beauty?

SJC:  I love an intelligent man, but I got lucky when I met my sexy and brilliant hubby. After 18 years of marriage, he’s still handsome and just as smart.

S:  I'm with you. There is nothing more sexy than an intelligent man!

How did you meet your husband? When did you know he was “the one?”

SJC:  This is going to sound like it’s completely made up, but I swear it’s the truth. My husband and I met randomly in a bookstore in June. We got married in June and the 19th is our wedding anniversary. I knew he was the one when we would stay up late at night just talking on the phone and yeah, we had those long moments of comfortable silences where neither of us said anything and we just listened to the other person breathing.

S:  That's so romantic!

Complete this sentence: “When one of my books is released, I….”

SJC:  Try not to think about it or the next book for at least a week. Sometimes I fail, though.

S:  What inspired "Everything You Need?"

SJC:  I began writing what would turn out to be the five-book series that includes "Everything You Need" over 10 years ago and living through two life-changing events—the birth of my second son and a relocation—and quitting writing. I don’t quite remember what inspired their story, but more than any other fictional people that I created, Alan Mitchell and Brianna Walsh clung to me through all that time. No matter how busy or chaotic life got during those days, I couldn’t get these characters and the love they had for each other out of my head. I had to put the story down on paper and I’m so happy I found the courage to publish it and share it with other romance lovers.

S:  Is there anything special you would like people to know about "Everything You Need?"

SJC:  As I mentioned before, sometimes my characters do what they want in the story. In the Being the Billionaire’s Girlfriend series, Alan Mitchell is the billionaire who falls for the woman he never expected. Well, that makes two of us because when I wrote the first words for these stories, Brianna was supposed to fall for another guy altogether. I still remember the exact scene I wrote where I knew there was no turning back. These two had to be together. Yes, Alan’s love for Brianna was that powerful. The memorable scene takes place in the fourth book, "Everything You Want," during one of the couple’s late-night rendezvous. If you’re curious to know which one after reading the books, you can always email me. I write back! One last note, while many readers have thoroughly enjoyed "Everything You Need" by itself, I’d recommend you read "Everything You Want," too. Both books showcase the struggle of an unconventional romance as well as the beautiful and steamy love story between Alan and Brianna. I hope you enjoy it!

Here's the blurb--

You can’t get everything you want. Sometimes, though, you get exactly what you need.

From the moment she met Alan Mitchell, Brianna knew he would be trouble. Nothing prepared her to fall for the guy of her dreams. The guy who just happened to be her billionaire client. Their contract was long over now. But he wants more. And trouble is, so does she.

Leave it to him to fall in love with the most stubborn woman he’s ever met. But Alan has never been closer to winning over Brianna Walsh. He almost lost her forever when his heart got way ahead of his head. She gave him a second chance. And now he’ll stop at nothing to convince her their love might be messy, but it’s real.

They know they love each other. But can they finally make it work?

S:  This type of story always tugs at my heart. Where can readers buy your book?

SJC:  It's available at https://books2read.com/everythingyouneed.

This week in The Loft: Author Judythe Morgan!

Joining me today in The Loft is award-winning author Judythe Morgan. Her unusual name--a gift from her parents-- has been both a blessing and a curse. As Judythe says, her name is a curse because it is rarely pronounced correctly, often misspelled, and never forgotten. However, the curse is double-edged. Judythe says the unique spelling helps readers remember her name. A self-proclaimed former Air Force brat and Army wife, Judythe has traveled the world and worked as a schoolteacher and antique dealer, and served as a former mayor's wife. Her life experiences have provided a myriad of material for her stories, which she now writes full-time.

Author Judythe Morgan

S:  Welcome to The Loft, Judythe. It is a pleasure to have you here!

Let's start at the beginning. Why write romance?

J:  Real life is filled with challenges and disappointment. Romance is about satisfying conclusions and hope. I believe readers want an escape from reality like I do when I read and that’s why I write romance.

S:  Offering an escape from reality is a worthy goal. Do you write in other genres?

J:  I do. My books blend sweet contemporary romance and women’s fiction stories, which I call love stories a/k/a Nicolas Sparks. I also wrote a military series, Promises, and a Christian contemporary series, The Fitzpatrick Family.

S:  When it comes to writing romance, do you consider yourself a dreamer or a realist?

J:  I’m more realist than dreamer. My life as a military kid then wife meant constant change and I spent a lot of time dreaming about roots and not having to say goodbye to friends. I guess that’s why the stories I write always have happy endings, even though the hero and heroine face major bumps and challenges to get there.

S:  I'm sure readers appreciate that dose of reality. Are there any characteristics your lead characters share?

J:  Some of my heroes are alphas. Some are betas. Most have military or public service backgrounds with a strong protector gene. My heroines are strong, independent women who are confident in who they are. All my characters operate from a Christian worldview.

S:  Do you adhere to tropes when writing romance? Which ones do you enjoy writing? Are there any tropes that make you squirm?

J:  Yes and no. Tropes are great to get the plotting juices going, but I want a unique story. I begin with an idea, get to know the characters, and then work out the plot. I don’t worry about which trope that might fit. The story is what’s most important to me and my stories have a twist or surprise to standard tropes. Except for the Hallmark holiday bingo tropes, I don’t have any problem with tropes. I’m always surprised by how creative authors are with familiar romance tropes.

S:  How did you meet your current partner? When did you know he/she was “the one?”

J:  My husband and I met in high school. I was a lowly freshman. He was a big, bad senior. He wore the craziest yellow plaid shirt and I knew right then, he was the one. Any senior who wasn’t trying to dress like everyone else was the man I needed. Our first date solidified my feelings and we’ve been together ever since.

S:  That's such a sweet story!

As a writer, did the pandemic and the subsequent isolation work to your benefit or detriment?

J:  Pandemic isolation was not a problem. I was fortunate enough to have a great critique group that did weekly video chats. Not being mobile kept my butt in the chair and my fingers on the keyboard. I published two books in the Fitzpatrick series in 2020.

S:  I'm impressed. Unfortunately, the pandemic threw me. It took a while for me to regain my footing.

Complete this sentence: “When one of my books is released, I...”

J:  Worry that no one will want to read it.

S:  If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose to write books?

J:  I’d start writing sooner. I love what I do.

S:  What inspires your stories?

J:  Inspiration comes from a vivid imagination and an ingrained habit of asking “what if?”

This week in The Loft: Author Robecca Austin!

Joining me today in The Loft is author Robecca Austin. Robecca writes historical romance and billionaire romance stories. She enjoys crafting tales of sassy heroines and alpha heroes with soft centers and in her books, there is always a happily-ever-after. Robecca enjoys being outside enjoying nature and lots of sunshine--when there are no bugs. A Cystic Fibrosis warrior, Robecca lives and works in Canada.

S:  Good morning, Robecca. Thanks for joining me in The Loft!

If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose to write books?

R:  Yes! I adore creating stories and bringing characters to life. Perhaps, I would have started earlier in the self-publishing arena and would have been more strategic in relation to the business side of writing.

S:  I think the business side stumps us all in the beginning. I was shocked to learn that I had to market my books.

Do you write in other genres?

R:  My published books are all romance, either billionaire contemporary or regency historical.

S:  As a writer, did the pandemic and the subsequent isolation work to your benefit or detriment?

R:  Honestly, I think a bit of both. I met fantastic readers and authors through online conferences and reader events. And because I was home, I really got to take my time getting to know everyone. As a writer, I can take or leave mingling, but until 2020, the choice was mine to make. In other aspects, I think my mental health did suffer. I currently experience monthly--sometimes more often--migraines which impact my writing schedule. That said, I am fortunate, many were affected in ways they have still not and may never recover from.

S:   What do people get wrong about romance?

R:  Especially in books, many think romance is just about sex. Romance is about trust, honesty, and that undeniable spark between the characters or people. The spark that makes your skin tingle or has you checking your phone every five minutes hoping the other person will say I miss you. Great sex is just a bonus.

S:  I agree. There is so much more to romance and it puzzles me that some don't understand that. Hopefully, romance books point the way.

Have you ever tried online dating?

R:  Heaven’s no. Could you imagine me in two-inch pumps --because that’s the highest I’ll wear outside the bedroom--sitting at the bar or a restaurant and the man that shows up doesn’t match the profile picture? Once you set an expectation you better meet it or beat it. And after a disappointing night, I would have to go home and take it out on my hero. And no one wants that.

S:  What inspired "The Captain's Lady?"

R:  I fell in love with regency stories very early on and couldn’t wait to tell one of my own. Nicholas’s character fulfilled a long-held dream to write a story featuring a Scottish seaman.

S:  Is there anything special you would like people to know about "The Captain’s Lady?"

R:  My favorite character in this story is Cassie. She is the adoptive daughter of our hero of the high seas, Nicholas. She reminded me of my daughter’s incorrigible side. Cassie is smart--both her mouth and her intellect--and everyone seems to fall in love with her.

Here's the blurb--

Lady Isabella Pennington’s life is mired in scandal, but not of her own making.

As London’s gentry bask in her heartache, she devises a plan to avoid another disastrous engagement. But those plans go awry as she struggles to forget the rogue Captain Nicholas years after the passionate afternoon they spent together.

Her intention to adhere to societal demands is admirable but short-lived when Nicholas shocks everyone by asking for her hand in marriage. What unfolds leaves Lady Isabella torn between societal expectations and her long-held desire.

Captain Nicholas is far from an aristocrat yet is held in high regard in some circles. With his attention focused on Lady Isabella, it’s all she can do to resist the handsome devil. Will a marriage of convenience be a means to a much-coveted end, or will it lead to another humiliating failure for Lady Isabella?

S:  Now that sounds steamy! Where can readers buy "The Captain's Lady?"

R:  It's available at--
